My Yard

Some New Yard Pictures 2014
More wild flowers this year, but in the center flowerbed instead of the far right one.  Interesting, because this bed is upwind from the picture of them posted in 2011.

These pots are upwind from all of the flower beds.  There are wild flowers, Columbine,  lettuce, hens and chicks that were planted in past years and came back by themselves.  I wonder what will be there next year.

I pulled most of the Mexican Primrose out, but I didn't get to this part of the yard.  They are slowing moving into the riverbed.  They have long tap roots and do not transplant well.  I need to watch for the seeds and save them, so I can move them back into the flower bed.  They all came from my neighbor's yard and she has none now.  She lives upwind.

This flowerbed and the riverbed in front of it need to be my next major project.  Most of the green in the flowerbed is grass and weeds. Looking to my left.

Same flowerbed with tons of grass.  Looking straight in front of me.
Not so bad from this angle.  Most of the green is strawberry plants.  Looking to my right.

This is the same boulder in the riverbed as the one above.  Just from the opposite side.  This part of the riverbed is fill with Mexican Primrose growing. This is where the Mexican Primrose was a few years ago and I pulled it all out. Well I thought I did.

Just below the boulder is chives.  They are around the trees on the other side of the yard for the most part, but have worked their way over here in the last few years.  See what happens when you let one thing go to seed.  You end up with tons. A few strawberry runners too.

Up above the boulder and the riverbed full of Mexican Primrose is the riverbed with lots of lilac bushes trying to grow.
So much for putting plastic down.  But then again it has been at least 12 to 15 years that it has been there and everyone walks through the riverbed all the time.

The Hostas is getting very pale in the full sun.  I am surprised it is flowering.  I am thinking of putting up the arches again and having a lighter weight plant growing on the arch than the honeysuckle that was there.

Baby's breath is growing.  I haven't seen any of that in my yard for a long time.

This Hollyhock is in front of the door.  It is from a seed that planted itself.  It has been good for stopping the kids from jumping over the flower bed. This is the same as the one that was at the fence corner a few years ago.  I pulled most of it out to get rid of the seeds.

Here is the corner where the Hollyhock used to be.  One is trying to grow.  I really like Stargazer Lillies.  I just need some brighter colored ones.  I don't know where the flower in the riverbed came from.

The Daylillies are blooming again.  We had to cut back the lilac.  It has gotten so big that the branches made holes in the screen.  It shades that window nicely though.

Yard Pictures 2011

These wildflowers are starting to die.  Last week I took my 21 month old granddaughter outside with me to cut a bunch of these flowers and put them in a vase.  She got the vase half full and started taking them out and tried to stand them back up in the flower bed.

The daffodils are gone.  The Larkspur are almost dead.  A few Gaillardia, and Mexican Evening Primrose are still here.

The same flower bed as above, but from the opposite end.

A Morning Glory growing along the netting that is covering the strawberries.  Theres flowers were in the front yard growing up the fence and windmill last year.

Artichokes never get big enough to eat in this climate, but they make really neat flowers.

These yellow flowers are Tickseed.  Last year I planted a 1 quart plant and this year it has spread to what you see now.

Behind the Tickseed is Oregano and Snapdragons.

I didn't get the Scarlet Runner Beans planted like I wanted to grow up the windmill, but it has plenty of other plants growing around it.  Red Hollyhocks and apricot Stargazer Lillies are in bloom.

This is where the daffodils and tulips were in the spring.  Now there is Larkspur, Gaillardia, and Mexican Evening Primrose.

Here is a closer view of the Larkspur.

This is what I get to see every morning.  Some days there are two, but one will always chase the other one away.

This is a Euphorbia plant growing on the hill in my yard.  This plant has water going to it, but there are many other smaller ones that do not have water.  This is a great plant for the high desert garden.

Mostly daffodils.  The squirrels dig up the tulips and run away with them.  I sometimes find tulip bulbs along their route in and out of my yard.  These flowers are in the shade most of the day.  They bloom about a month later than most, because they are shaded.

Seems the squirrels like to eat Grape Hyacinth also.  Now I will have to dig them all up and spread them out to fill in the blank they created.

Lots if miniature iris in the front yard.  Since it is cold this year they still haven't bloomed.  And I love the violas that return on their own every year.

I usually have morning glories growing on this windmill in the summer.  This year I am thinking about having Scarlet Runner Beans growing up it.

The first lilacs are opening and snow is expected.  I hope they don't freeze.  I love lilacs.

I grow herbs in pots in the front yard every year.  There is also an herb bed in the back yard.  This year there are herbs and sweet peppers in pots.  Who know what else may show up in pots out here too.
